Unit 5

Review

89

Review

The Past Simple tense is used to talk about actions or situations that started and finished in the past.

    ◦ Positive: I/He/She/It was; You/We/They were.

    ◦ Negative: I/He/She/It wasn't (was not); You/We/They weren't (were not).

    ◦ Questions: Was I/he/she/it...?; Were you/we/they...?.

    ◦ Short answers: Yes, I/he/she/it was. / No, I/he/she/it wasn't. | Yes, you/we/they were. / No, you/we/they weren't.

90

Review

Form of Regular Verbs:

    ◦ Positive: Subject + verb + -ed (e.g., worked, stopped, tried, finished).

    ◦ Negative: Subject + didn't (did not) + verb (base form) (e.g., didn't talk, didn't play).

    ◦ Questions: Did + Subject + verb (base form)? (e.g., Did she work?).

    ◦ Short answers: Don't repeat the main verb. Use 'did' or 'didn't' (e.g., Yes, she did. / No, she didn't.).

Spelling Rules for -ed:

        ▪ Most regular verbs: + -ed (e.g., started).

        ▪ Verbs ending in -e: + -d (e.g., decided).

92

Review

Form of Irregular Verbs:

    ◦ Many verbs have irregular past simple forms that do not end in -ed (e.g., go → went, come → came, give → gave, take → took, have → had). These forms must be learned individually.
