5 STEPS to Identify THEME

  1. Notice the big moments: "What moment changes everything?"

  2. Notice growth: "What lessons do main characters learn or realize?"

  3. Notice struggles: "What problems/challenges do they face and how did they overcome them?"

  4. Notice repeated ideas: "What words, symbols, ideas, or emotions always show up?"

  5. Say it in a statement: "What is the author's message about life, love, people, etc.?"
