​Semicolons

​Semicolons are used to join two related independent clauses in place of a comma and a coordinating conjunction (and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet).

​Reminder- If you use a semicolon, you do not have to capitalize the beginning of the second sentence.

​Rule #1

  • ​You can only use a semicolon between two related independent clauses.

  • ​This means that both sides of the semicolon have to be complete sentences.

  • ​It will not have a fragment on either side.

​Example:

  • ​My dog Oreo loves snacks; he is a chunky boy.

​NonExample

  • ​My dog Oreo loves snacks; especially jerky.
