What is a stem changer?

• Stem changers are verbs that have a spelling change in the stem

• The rest of the verb is conjugated like normal

How do stem changers change?

• Take the "o" and change it to "ue" or change the "e" to "ie" in all forms except nosotros and vosotros. (The subjects that form a boot)

• The O or E in the last syllable of the stem is what changes

• Replace the -ar/-er/-ir with the appropriate ending.

Gustar is not like all -ar verbs...

• Most verbs conjugate based on who is doing the action (Yo canto, tú cantas, él canta, nosotros cantamos, ellos cantan)

• Gustar only has two forms: Gusta (singular) and Gustan (plural)

• It does not match who is doing the liking. Instead, it conjugates  based on what is being liked.

No me gusta estudiar. (I don't like to study.)

Now let's talk about "gustar". Gustar means "to be pleasing..."

• In English, we say, "I like chocolate." The person is the subject and at the center of the sentence.

• In Spanish, the chocolate is the important part of the sentence. It is expressed: Me gusta el chocolate.

• "Me gusta el chocolate," translates literally to "Chocolate is pleasing to me," although we wouldn't say it that way in English.

• Gustar functions like the other verbs we just learned about.

The next big thing to remember is that when a verb follows gustar, it stays in the infinitive form!

• Infinitives = most basic form of the verb

• In English, we add "to" in front of it (to walk, to skate, to eat). We see it's an infinitive AT THE BEGINNING with "to."

• In Spanish, the infinitive get's marked AT THE END with -ar, -er, or -ir (caminar, patinar, comer)

• So, what does this look like in action???
