What is Narrative Text?

• A text that tells a story.

• Its purpose is to entertain the reader or listener.

• Usually imaginary or fictional.

Generic Structure of Narrative Text

• Orientation → introduces characters, place, and time

• Complication → problems or conflicts arise

• Resolution → solution to the problem

• (Sometimes) Re-orientation → moral value or ending

Language Features of Narrative Text

• Past tense (e.g., went, saw, played)

• Time conjunctions (e.g., then, suddenly, after that)

• Action verbs (e.g., ran, climbed, fought)

• Direct & indirect speech

Examples of Narrative Text

• Fairy tales: Cinderella, Snow White

• Fables: The Lion and the Mouse

• Legends: Malin Kundang, Sangkuriang

• Folk tales: Timun Mas

Example Text (Short Version)

Title: The Ant and The Dove

• Orientation: An ant fell into the river.

• Complication: It could not swim and was about to drown.

• Resolution: A dove dropped a leaf to save the ant. Later, the ant saved the dove from a hunter.

• Moral Value: Kindness will be rewarded.
