the French and Indian War was fought between 1754 and 1763. It was a pivotal event that set the stage for the American Revolution. The conflict arose from territorial disputes, competition for resources, and colonial expansion. While the British emerged victorious, the consequences of the war sowed the seeds of dissatisfaction that would eventually lead to the quest for independence and the establishment of the United States government.

Great Britain Raises Taxes
Great Britain had won the French and Indian War, but Parliament still had to pay for it. Parliament raised the colonists' taxes for money to pay for the war. The tax money was used to help pay for a British army to protect the colonists against American Indian attacks. Parliament also tried harder to arrest smugglers avoiding taxes. Many colonists believed Britain had no right to tax them without their permission. In May 1764, Samuel Adams and James Otis inspired the slogan "No Taxation without Representation." Colonists refused to buy goods. They hoped Parliament would end the new taxes. Samuel Adams helped found the Committees of Correspondence was method of communication between towns and colonies about how to challenge new British laws.

After the French and Indian War, England attempted to recover its war debt and control its growing empire by imposing new taxes and laws on the American colonies. Measures such as the Proclamation of 1763, Sugar Act, Stamp Act, and Townshend Acts were seen by colonists as unfair because they were enacted without colonial representation. Events like the Boston Massacre and Boston Tea Party revealed how anger and resentment were spreading, ultimately leading to Britain’s harsh response through the Intolerable Acts. These conflicts over taxation and control did not just challenge daily life in the colonies—they laid the foundation for a united resistance and the eventual movement toward independence.
