Standard LS2.4
Construct an explanation that uses abiotic (e.g., precipitation, temperature, soil) and biotic (e.g., biodiversity, number of organisms) patterns in earth’s terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems (e.g., tundra, taiga, deciduous forest, desert, grasslands, rainforest, marine, and freshwater) as measures of ecosystem health.

2
EQ:
How can patterns in biotic and abiotic factors help us determine the health of different ecosystems on earth?
3
Engage:
Imagine you're an explorer traveling across the land! You start in a frozen, icy place, then move to a warm, rainy forest, then a dry, sandy area.
What's different about these places?
4
Explore: Look up the word below and become the expert.
Draw a picture and come up with 3 descriptors about your word!
Be ready to share with each other!
Abiotics: Biotics:
Terrestrial Biodiversity
Ecosystem
5
Draw
Abiotics: Draw biodiversity based on what your partner shared.
Biotics: draw terrestrial ecosystem based on what your partner shared.
6
Word Cloud
EXPLORE:
Read about the word terrestrial on page 99.
What do you think it looks like?
7
What is climate?
Let's watch how scientists organize this information
Explain:
Climographs
(Climate Graphs)
8
9
Land biomes review
Let's review the land biomes you researched.
Be prepared to talk about biotic and abiotic factors in each one.
We will be graphing the average amount of precipitation as we review the biomes.
10
11
Fill in Tundra!
12
13
Fill in Taiga
14
Open Ended
Abiotics: What are some similarities between the tundra and the taiga?
Biotics: What are some differences between the tundra and the taiga?
You will type the response of your partner!
15
16
Fill in
Deciduous Forest
17
What is unique about deciduous trees?
18
19
Fill in Tropical Rainforest
20
Quick check:
What are the similarities between the deciduous forest and the rainforest?
Biotics to Abiotics:
What are the differences between the deciduous forest and the rainforest?
Abiotics tell Biotics:
21
22
Fill in Grasslands
23
24
Fill in Desert
25
Instructions: Read each data card carefully. Based on the information about temperature, precipitation, soil, plants, and animals, decide which terrestrial biome each card describes (Tundra, Taiga, Deciduous Forest, Desert, Grasslands, Rainforest).
Write the biome name.
Then, list the specific abiotic factors and biotic factors mentioned on the card.
Elaborate: Terrestrial Ecosystem Data Cards (Day 1)
26
Evaluate:
In your journal, create a food chain from any of the biomes we just discussed. There needs to be a producer, consumer, and a decomposer.
You will use this information on the next slide.
27
Open Ended
Evaluate: Using what you learned about biomes and the factors within these environments, select a producer, consumer and decomposer from a biome to model. Include 1 abiotic factor and demonstrate how they interact with the biotic factors within your model.
EX: Desert, a bush (producer) provides abiotic shelter and food for the mice (biotic and consumer).
