Where does the energy in the food web originate from?

• Apex Preadators

• The sun
• Warm Air

• Producers

Light energy is transferred to chemical energy through photosynthesis. Light, water and carbon dioxide are used to make glucose (sugar).

Energy Flow

Energy pyramids are a diagram that shows how energy is transferred through an ecosystem.

It is organized by trophic level!

90% of energy is lost at each level to heat, waste, etc.

100% (10,000 calories)

1% (100 calories)

10% (1,000 calories)

0.1% (10 calories)

1. On the blank triangle, write in the species from your food web that fit in each category.

2. Suppose your producers have 45,000 calories. Calculate how many calories each level has on the top triangle.

3. Decorate and color each trophic level on the pyramid a different background color. Cut, and glue it together.
