12 Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:

And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:

And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

1. God’s Call to Abram (Genesis 12:1–3)

So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.

And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.

And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land.

And the Lord appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the Lord, who appeared unto him.

And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the Lord, and called upon the name of the Lord.

And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south.

2. Abram’s Obedience (Genesis 12:4–9)

1. Peaceful Separation from Lot (Genesis 13)

  • Abram and Lot had many flocks and herds, and their herdsmen began to argue.

  • Abram said: “Let there be no strife… for we be brethren.” (Genesis 13:8)

  • He let Lot choose first, showing humility and generosity. Lot chose the fertile plains near Sodom, while Abram stayed in Canaan.

  • After Lot left, God reassured Abram:

“All the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.” (Genesis 13:15)

3. God’s Protection and Provision (Genesis 13–14)

11

2. Abram Rescues Lot (Genesis 14)

  • Lot was captured during a war between kings.

  • Abram gathered 318 trained servants and bravely rescued Lot, defeating powerful enemies.

  • After the victory, Abram met Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of the most high God, who blessed him.

  • Abram gave Melchizedek a tithe of all.

  • When the king of Sodom offered Abram riches, Abram refused, saying:

“I will not take… lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich.” (Genesis 14:23)

This showed Abram’s trust in God’s provision, not in worldly wealth.

1. Abram’s Concern

Abram was worried because he had no children. He asked God:

“Lord God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless?” (Genesis 15:2)

He thought his servant, Eliezer, would inherit everything.

4. God’s Covenant with Abram (Genesis 15)

2. God’s Promise

God reassured Abram:

“This shall not be thine heir… he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.” (Genesis 15:4)

Then God took Abram outside and said:

“Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars… So shall thy seed be.” (Genesis 15:5)

3. Abram’s Faith

Abram believed God’s promise.

“And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.” (Genesis 15:6)

4. The Covenant Ceremony

God made a formal covenant with Abram. He told him to prepare animals for a sacred ritual. As Abram fell into a deep sleep, God spoke again, promising:

  • His descendants would be strangers in a land for 400 years.

  • They would come out with great wealth.

  • Abram would live a long life and die in peace.

  • His descendants would inherit the land of Canaan.

“Unto thy seed have I given this land…” (Genesis 15:18)
