Energy Forms & Transformations
By Ms. Brown
2
STORED energy
or
Energy that is ready to be released.
Potential Energy
3
Potential Energy (PE)
Kinetic Energy (KE)
Two Types of Energy
The ability to MOVE or CHANGE matter in some way.
The ability to do WORK.
Science Definition
What is Energy?
4
The more massive an object is, the more work is required to move it.
The more work required to move an object - the more PE an object has.
Potential Energy and Size
5
Hotspot
Click on where the rollercoaster has the MOST potential energy.
6
Any moving object has Kinetic Energy
The faster an object is moving, the more Kinetic Energy it has.
The more massive an object, the more KE it has
How does Kinetic Energy Work?
7
Yes! Objects in motion can have a mix of PE and KE
Can something have both PE and KE?
8
As the ball rolls down the hill, PE is converted into KE. While in the middle of the hill, the ball has BOTH!
9
Electromagnetic Energy
Definition: Sun gives off energy as
electromagnetic waves it is called radiant
energy.
Examples :
Microwaves
Gas flames
10
Chemical Energy
Examples:
Chemical energy- is energy stored in the bonds of
atoms and molecules. Chemical energy is converted to
thermal energy when people burn wood in a fireplace or
burn gasoline in a car's engine.
11
Electrical Energy
Electric Energy- is the energy
that an electric current carries.
Examples:
12
Sound Energy
Sound energy- is the movement of energy in waves. It is
generated by vibrations and needs a medium, such as air,
water, or a solid to travel through. It is produced when
sound waves move outwards from a vibrating object or
sound source.
13
Nuclear Energy
Nuclear Energy - is energy that is stored in
the nucleus of an atom
Examples:
Sun
Nuclear weapons
14
Thermal Energy
Thermal Energy: is the energy due to the motion of
particles that make up an object. Thermal energy
moves from hot or warm objects and heats up the
contacting surface.
Examples:

Law of Conservation of Energy
• Energy cannot be created or destroyed.
• It can only be transformed or transferred from
one form to another.
23
Key Concept
• The total energy of an isolated system remains
constant over time.
24
Dropdown
25
Conservation of Energy Example
• Roller Coaster:
• - At the top: Maximum potential energy
• - As it moves: Potential energy converts to
kinetic energy
• - Total energy remains constant.
26
Labelling
Label the parts of the track.
Least potential energy
Most potential energy
Both kinetic and potential energy
27
Energy Transformation
• Energy transformation is the process of
changing energy from one form to another.
• Example: Chemical energy in food becomes
mechanical energy in your body.
28
Examples of Energy
Transformations
• 1. Electrical to Thermal: Toaster
• 2. Chemical to Mechanical: Car engine
• 3. Solar to Electrical: Solar panels
29

30
Multiple Choice
Which description of the energy conversions in this process is correct?
The chemical energy in the fuel-air mixture is converted to thermal energy, which is then converted to mechanical energy
The mechanical energy in the fuel-air mixture is converted to electrical energy, which is then converted to thermal energy
The electrical energy in the fuel-air mixture is converted to mechanical energy, which is then converted to thermal energy
