The introduction paragraph sets the stage for your essay and gives your readers a clear understanding of your focus.
Intro Paragraph
6
Start with a sentence that grabs the reader's attention.
👉🏽This could be an interesting fact, a thought-provoking question, or a very short story related to your topic.
1. Hook
Here are some examples-
Fact: The word narcissism - a term used in psychology today to describe excessive self-love - actually comes from the ancient Greek myth of Narcissus
Question: What happens when admiration for oneself crosses the line into obsession, and can too much self-love be just as destructive as not enough?
Very Short Story: Imagine scrolling through social media and seeing someone who never posts anything but selfies, each one carefully edited to perfection. This modern obsession with appearance mirrors the story of Narcissus.
7
Introduce the myth you are analyzing and explain its importance to the topic of cultural resilience.
👉🏽This helps your reader understand the background of your essay.
2. Context
Here is an example-
The myth of Narcissus tells the story of a beautiful young man who becomes so captivated by his own reflection that he wastes away, symbolizing the dangers of excessive pride and vanity. This myth is important to cultural resilience because it has been retold and reinterpreted for centuries, offering timeless lessons.
8
End your introduction with a strong thesis statement. Your thesis should clearly answer the unit question.
How can culture be resilient through storytelling?
👉🏽It should include your main claim and three reasons to support - these reasons are your body paragraphs.
Template: The myth of ______ helps keep _______ culture resilient by....
3. Thesis
Here is an example-
Culture can be resilient through the storytelling of the myth of Narcissus because it preserves Greek warnings against vanity and pride, it passes down lessons about balance in human behavior, and it continues to adapt as a metaphor for modern issues like self-image and social media.
