How does the transfer of energy through conduction, convection, and radiation affect the climate and weather patterns of specific regions of earth?

How do meteorologists predict weather patterns?

2

Standard Essential Question

ESS2.1 How does uneven heating of the Earth create convection patterns in the ocean and atmosphere?

3

Engage: What is making you feel warm in each situation? Discuss with your table group.

  • You touch the handle of a metal pan that’s been sitting on a hot stove.

  • You’re sitting in front of a campfire and your face feels warm.

  • You’re standing in the kitchen when someone opens the oven — you feel a wave of warm air.

Be ready to share:
What is happening in each situation?
How is the heat getting to you?
Do all 3 happen in the same way?

4

Explore: You just described the three ways heat moves — by touching something hot, by moving warm air or water, and by invisible rays of energy. Those are called conduction, convection, and radiation — and today we’re going to explore how each one works.

Conduction, Convection, Radiation Hand Signals

  • Conduction...(knuckles touching)

  • Convection...(move hands in circular motion)

  • Radiation...(open arms like wings)

How is CONVECTION related to DENSITY?

Think of a lava lamp: the blobs of wax heat up, rise because they’re less dense, cool down, sink because they’re more dense, and the cycle repeats. That’s convection!

Go to the Canvas module titled, Week of 10/13 - Warmups. Using the answer sheet I gave you, look at each picture and write the type of heat transfer that the picture is showing.
