Terms we have prior knowledge of:

Civic Duty - responsibilities and obligations of citizens to participate in their government and community to promote the common good

Obligation: A duty required by law
Responsibility: Something good citizens should do voluntarily.

Jury Duty - Sitting through a court hearing with 11 other people to decide if a person is guilty or innocent

Council Meetings - Local government officials gather with local residents to discuss local government functions

Turn and talk time!
Using your elbow partner, Discuss the meaning of Obligations versus Responsibilities of citizens.
DEFINITION NOT EXAMPLES.

On one of your whiteboards write: "obligation" and tell me what it means.
On the other partners whiteboard, write "Responsibility" and tell me what it means (DEFINE EACH WORD).

When Timer is done, Raise your boards facing the front of the class.
