"le" or not?

  • If something is happening just once, use the day of week by itself

    Example: Lundi, je mets un t-shirt. = On Monday, I put on a t-shirt.

  • If something is happening every week, use "le" + day of week

    Example: Le lundi, j'ai anglais. = On Mondays, I have English.

  • For the subjects we just reviewed, each had "un" or "une" before it.

  • These are indefinite articles, which translate as "a", "an", or "some".
    "un" is used for masculine singular (ex: un classeur)
    "une" is used for feminine singular (ex: une tablette)
    "des" is used for all plurals (ex: des cahiers)

Expressing need

besoin de (or d' )

When expressing need in French, we say we "have need of" something. In our unit, we have seen the following:

  • ​J'ai besoin de / d'... = I need...

  • Tu as besoin de / d'... = You need...

  • Il / Elle a besoin de / d'... = He / she needs...


note: use d' when next word begins with vowel or h

Definite articles

le, la, l', les

  • le, la, l', and les are definite articles, which indicate "the"

  • Like indefinite articles, they are based on gender and number of noun
    "le" is used for masculine singular (ex: le classeur)
    "la" is used for feminine singular (ex: la tablette)

    "l' " is used for any singular that starts with a vowel or h (ex: l'instrument)
    "les" is used for all plurals (ex: les cahiers)

Colors go after the noun!

Colors are placed after the noun in French.
Ex: une jupe rouge
They must also agree in gender and number. For most, add an "e" to make feminine, "s" for plural, "es" for plural feminine
