***Let's watch the video on page 3 in Edio. As you watch, think about how much time it took for Canada to ultimately gain independence. In the video, you will be introduced to the vocabulary word

The government of Canada is a combination of two different types!

Canada also uses a parliamentary democracy, where voters elect representatives to a lawmaking group called Parliament. So, a king is king in title, but nothing more.

Canadian Government

Once the members of Parliament have been elected, they choose someone to be their leader. This is the prime minister, or the head of an elected government. The prime minister runs Canada from day to day.

A governor-general acts in the place of the king for events, or to make other decisions. Canada also has a Supreme Court, or the court with the most power in the nation. Nine judges sit on the Supreme Court of Canada.

Canada's strong economy relies on resources like like timber, fish, energy resources, and minerals.

One of the
most important natural resources in Canada is access to both fresh AND salt water. This resource is used for many reasons including drinking water, farming, electricity, and fishing.

Minerals like gold, silver, iron, nickel, and copper are important and available in different parts of Canada.

Minerals are a nonrenewable resource and can become depleted, so the country has to monitor the amounts that are being taken. Fishing limits have to be followed too.
