    (birth–14/15): This is the initial stage where a person develops their self-concept through fantasy, interests, and curiosity. 

  • Exploration

    (15–24): During this stage, individuals begin to crystallize career preferences, specify interests, and try out different roles. They gain more independence and explore career possibilities. 

  • Establishment

    (25–44): Individuals try to prove their competence and find a stable position in their chosen career. They make serious career choices and may begin to question initial commitments. 

  • Maintenance

    (45–64): In this stage, the focus is on maintaining one's position in the career. Individuals may feel they have reached their peak or become stagnant and might consider new learning opportunities or changing direction. 

  • Decline

    (65+): This stage involves preparing for retirement and beginning to disengage from the workforce. Interests shift to other activities, such as part-time work, volunteering, travel, or spending time with family and friends.
