Introduction to Conjunctions

Have you ever tried to tell a story with short, choppy sentences? 'I went to the store. I bought apples.' It can sound a little robotic. Conjunctions are connecting words that join words, phrases, or even whole sentences together. Think of them as the bridges of our language. They help our writing and speaking flow naturally, turning simple statements into more detailed and interesting thoughts.

Let's Learn with an Example

media

Here are two related sentences: 'The team played hard. The team lost the game.'

They show opposite ideas, which is a contrast. We can use a conjunction like 'but' to connect them.

Let's combine them into one sentence: 'The team played hard, but lost the game.'

This new sentence flows better and clearly shows the relationship between the ideas.
