​QAR:Question Answer Relationships or how asking good questions makes me a better reader.

​Four types of questions...

The answer is right there in the exst. The question uses words that are the same as or similar to what shows up in the text. You can point to the answer in the text.

Right there questions

Who in the story...
What happened when...
When did the protagonist...
Name the street...
List examples from the story...
How many chapters...
Identify the main character...

​Key words...

The answer is in the text, but you will have to search for it. The answer isn't word for word like a "Right There" question. Think about what you know and what the author says about the text.

Think and search questions

What examples do you find...
Evaluate the author's use...
Explain what the author means...
Compare the protagonist to...
Describe the setting...
What happened when the antagonist...

These answers are not in the text. You must think about what you already know. For this typeof question, you may not need to read the passage. These are inferencing questions.

the answer is not found in the text. To answer this type of questions, you must make a connection between what the question is asking, what the author says, and what you know. These are personal questions meant to make you think about what the author is saying.
