Four friends wash cars.

  • Two friends earn £36

  • The other two earn £44

They share the money equally.
How much does each friend get?

3

media

When money is shared equally, I always do this in two steps.

First, I
add all the money together to find the total.

Then, I
divide the total by the number of people sharing.

I always ask: How much altogether? and How many people are sharing?

A train is due to leave at 9:40 am but leaves 6 minutes late.

A passenger has been on the train station for
54 minutes when it arrives.

How long did the train journey take?

Teacher tips

Time problems often try to catch us out with delays.

I deal with them one change at a time.

First, I find the
actual start time.

Then I use the total time to work out how long the journey took.

I often like to draw a timeline to help me stay organised.

Put these lengths in order from shortest to longest:

0.8 m, 72 cm, 850 mm, 0.75 m, 90 cm

Which length should be second?

7

media

When lengths are written in different units, I must convert them first.

I choose one unit — usually centimetres — and change everything into that unit, using multiplication or division depending on whether the unit is smaller or larger

Only then do I put them in order.

Three large parcels each weigh 4.8 kg.
Six identical small parcels have the same total mass.

What is the mass of one small parcel?

9

media

When two groups have the same total mass, I start by finding that total.

Once I know the total mass, I divide it equally between the number of items asked for.

These questions are usually multiply first, then divide.

A jug holds 1.9 litres of juice. Each cup holds 300 ml. How much juice is left after filling as many full cups as possible?

11

media

For capacity questions, I check that everything is in the same unit.
I like to multiply/divide to make sure everything is the same unit.

Then I divide to see how many full cups I can fill.

If the question asks how much is left, I look at the remainder.

A runner finishes a race in 4 h 12 min 10 s.
Her friend finishes
14 min 30 s faster.
Another runner finishes
10 min 20 s slower than the faster runner.

How long did the slower runner take?

13

media

Words like faster and slower tell me what to do.

Faster means I subtract time. So from the original runner I subtract the difference in time
Slower means I
add time. So I then add the slower runners difference time

I work one step at a time and keep hours, minutes and seconds lined up - like column addition

Alex packs 480 eggs into boxes of 6.
Jamie packs
504 eggs into boxes of 8.

How many more boxes does Alex fill than Jamie?

15

media

These questions ask how many full groups we can make.

I divide for each person first.

Then I compare the answers carefully to find the difference.
