The Odyssey
The Odyssey, is an ancient myth originating in Greece, which was composed by Homer in verse (poetry) and first told by oral storytellers, only being written in Greek many years later. This version of the myth is a new retelling by Gillian Cross, who uses prose instead of poetry, and which is accompanied by Neil Packer’s illustrations.
10
The Odyssey
“The author Gillian Cross lets the reader know that we are about to read a ‘tale of human
endurance’ in which a man ‘[spends] ten years…[struggling] to sail home’ (9). Based on these
contextual clues, why might the myth be titled The Odyssey? What might odyssey mean?”
