What is a ratio? If you're not sure, what do you think it is?

Ratio
A ratio is a way of comparing two quantities.
For example: Look at the picture.
How many books?
How many pencils?
Sometimes ratio compare a part and a part, while other times they compare a part and a whole.

There are 3 ways to write ratios.
As a fraction.
With a colon :
Using the word "to"

What is the ratio of books to pencils?
This is considered a part to part ratio.

Ex: A soccer team played 19 games and won 10. What is the ratio of the number of wins to the number of games played?

Ex: A soccer team played 19 games and won 10. What is the ratio of the number of wins to the number of losses?

Ratios must also be written in simplest form.
