​Follow the Pattern

Today, you will follow the syllable pattern and write as many words as you can with open syllables.

Words that have open syllables help you know that the vowel makes its sound. Remember, the letter y sometimes acts as a vowel.

​Word Matrices

Remember, you can use a word matrix to combine morphemes and create words.


Word matrixes include: prefixes; a base or root word; suffixes; and secondary suffixes.

Open Ended

Create two word sums by using the word matrix. Then, create a sentence using one of your words.

For example:

  • re + cogni + ize = recognize

  • I recognize her from the park last week.

​Reading Smoothly

Reading smoothly only happens when you are scooping phrases, or groups of words, together. Reading words one by one or in the wrong grouping can make your reading sound choppy.


Smooth readers often have a better understanding of their books and stories, too.
