The Indian Knowledge System (IKS) is defined as a structured body of indigenous knowledge generated by Indian society that is internally consistent, comprehensive, and exhaustive. It comprises three fundamental components: being "Indian", representing "knowledge", and functioning as a "system"
.

The Three Components of IKS

Indian: This refers to knowledge originating from Akhandabharat, a geographic region spanning from Kandahar to Burma and from the Himalayas to the ocean. Demographically, it pertains to those born in this region or those who have substantively integrated into the culture, as living within the culture is essential to understanding the nuances of its vocabulary and practices.

Knowledge: This includes both tacit and explicit knowledge derived from a culture of observation, experimentation, analysis, and validation. It exists in both formal repositories (written texts) and informal traditions (oral transmissions, folk practices, and life habits).

System: This refers to the structured way this knowledge is organised, ensuring it is comprehensive and allows for one area of knowledge to be understood in relation to another.

Kitāb Ṭabaqāt al-Umam

"The first nation (to have cultivated science) is Hind. This is a powerful nation having a large population, and a rich kingdom. Hind is known for the wisdom of its people.Over many centuries, all the kings of the past have recognized the ability of the Hindus in all branches of knowledge."

The Chaturdasha Vidyasthana (14 Abodes of Knowledge) forms the organizing "skeleton" or curriculum of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS).

While the Vedas are the source of wisdom, the Chaturdasha Vidyasthana is the methodology used to decode, analyze, and apply that wisdom. It turns abstract philosophy into a rigorous educational system.
