Religion
Religion is a way some people understand the world and what they believe about God or gods, life, and what happens after we die.
Many religions teach people how to be kind, help others, and make good choices. People may pray, read special books, sing songs, or go to special buildings to practice their religion.

Religion explained the world
Religion also helped people feel safe and hopeful. People prayed for good weather, healthy families, and protection. It helped them feel less afraid of death and believe there was life after death.
Finally, religion taught rules for how to behave. It helped communities know what was right and wrong and brought people together through shared beliefs, stories, and celebrations.

The Ancient Greeks believed that after a person died, their soul went to the Underworld.
They believed the Underworld was ruled by Hades. A soul had to cross a river called the River Styx to enter the Underworld. A ferryman named Charon took souls across the river.

The Ancient Greeks believed that happy Gods meant happy lives, so they spent a lot of time celebrating the Gods and praying to them. To show the Gods how important they were, the Greeks built temples in every town for one God or Goddess. The most famous temple is the Parthenon in Athens. This temple was built for the Goddess Athena, the protector of the city.
