Development of a New Nation

Causes of the French and Indian War:

• If a British soldier asked to stay in your house.
• British taxes on paper, glass, lead, and other imported goods. 
• The British and the French/Native Americans were fighting over land across the Appalachian Mountains in the Ohio River Valley region

Sugar Act 

• British tax on paper, glass, lead and other imported goods.
• British tax on all sugar and molasses.
• British tax on all paper products. The colonists strongly protested this law. 

Thomas "Big Foot" Spencer 

• Long hunter famous for settling near the Cumberland River. Helped to found the city of Nashville.
• Created the Watauga Settlement, the first settlement in Tennessee.
• Chief of the Cherokee who sold the Watauga Purchase to Richard Henderson. 

Quartering Act

• If a British soldier asked to stay in your house you had to let them. 
• British tax on paper, glass, lead and other imported goods. 
• A British policy that took control of the colonies trade. Based on the idea that a colony's purpose is to help the parent country with resources. 

"No taxation without representation"

• This phrase was popular amoun the colonies.  The colonies were upset that the British were taxing them without giving them a representative in Parliament. 
• The court case that helped establish freedom of the press. 
• A reason for the French and Indian war. 

Peter Zenger Trial 

• Court case that helped establish freedom of the press. He was found not guilty because what he wrote about the governor of New York was true. 
• The first constitution created beyond the Appalacian Mountains.
• The Cherokee destroyed the British fort after the British had taken 38 Cherokee hostage. 

Proclamation of 1763

• A law issued by the king forbidding the American Colonists to move to land wast of the Appalachian Mountains. This angered the colonists. 
• British policy that took control of the colonists trade. 
• An early leader of both the Watauga and the Cumberland settlements. 

Declaratory Act 

• Took away the Stamp Act.  It also declared that the British had the right to tax the colonies without the colonies permission. 
• Seperated the colonists from the west. 
• Tax on sugar and molasses.

Dragging Canoe

• Little Carpenter's son that did not like the colonists and tried to convince his father not to trust the settlers. 
• An early leader of both the Watauga and Cumberland settlements, he has been called the "Father of Middle Tennessee." 
• Trail created by Daniel Boone. 

Benjamin Franklin 

• Was a founding father as well as a scientist, inventor, printer, and diplomat.  He created the join or die political cartoon. 
• Father of Dragging Canoe.
• Created the Watauga Settlement.
