Germany After The Great War

After the war, as a new government was being established in Germany, rumors spread throughout Germany saying that,

• "Germany lost the war because the Kaiser betrayed the German people."

• "Germany lost the war only because they were outmanned."

• “Germany did not lose the war. ...[the soldiers] were betrayed by others back home.”

• “Germany lost the war because Germany was technologically outmanned."

Military leaders, like Ludendorff, told Germans that Germany had been betrayed by,

• Social Democrats

After World War I, European nations reduced the size of their,

• annual budgets

• GDPs

• militaries

• social welfare programs

Many of the returning soldiers from the Great War were not ready to settle down in Germany as they, instead,

• joined paramilitary groups that were quick to “defend” the fatherland

• traveled throughout Europe to visit the battlegrounds of the conflict

• traveled to the United States to escape the memories of the Great War

• all of the above

This group believed they could “raise the present miserably low standard of the human race” by “breeding the best with the best” and eliminating so-called “racially defective” human beings.

Thousands of German men returned home from the Great War,
