Civil rights groups recruited college students and trained them in nonviolent resistance. Thousands of student volunteers-mostly white, about 1/3 female-went into Mississippi to help register voters; met with violence and some killed.

Little Rock, Arkansas developed a plan to integrate nine black students into their all-white Central High School. Governor Orval Faubus did not approve ordered the National Guard to maintain peace at the high school. Nearly a month later, and at President Eisenhower’s discretion, over 1,200 paratroopers escorted the nine students into the school.
