MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION

30 sec • 1 pt

Read the passage:

The Largest Mammal That Lived on Land

After the dinosaurs became extinct, mammals still survived. As time went on, some very large mammals came into bein. The largest mammal that we know of was the indricotherium ( pronounced in-dri-kih0theer- ee- uhm). This cousin of the rhinoceros stood close to 16 feet tall! In fact, it was as big as a house. Like a rhinoceros, the indricotherium had three toes on each foot. Unlike the rhinoceros, it had long legs and a long neck. It also did not have horns.

This giant mammal did not eat meat. It was tall enough to eat leaves at the tops of trees. It was so large as an adult that no other animal would try to attack it. However, a baby indricotherium needed its mother to protect it for two to three years.

The indrocotherium lived between thirty and sixteen million years ago in Asia. A young scientist first found its fossils in 1932. The fossils were in what is now Pakistan.

Why did this mammal die out? It seems that forests in Asia got drier and became grasslands. There were not enough plants for this animal to eat. At that point, they became extinct.

Some scientists believe that the indricotherium were nearly as large as the saurpod dinosaurs. They were truly among the world’s largest animals ever.
