All About Empathy (for kids!)

What is empathy?

• When you are able to understand how someone else might be thinking or feeling.

• When you treat other people the same way that they treated you.

• When you try to read other peoples mind in order to understand why they do the things they do.

• When you feel sorry for someone because they have a hard life and no ones understands them.

Empathy is all about...

• what you would do if you were them.

• what you would feel if you were them.

• the other person.

Why is empathy so important?

• It helps you know how to best respond to other people.

• It helps you feel sorry for other people.

• It helps you feel good about yourself.

• It gives you good grades.

When you have an idea of what someone is feeling, you have a better chance of knowing what to do or say to them that might...

• be helpful.

• be hurtful.

• excite them.

• fix all their problems.

What is the best question to ask yourself in order to be able to show empathy to someone?

• How might they be feeling?

• How did they get in this situation?

• How can I fix their problem?

• What would I do if I were them?

Empathy is not only about figuring out how someone is feeling, but also...

• giving them ideas on how to solve their problems.

• caring enough to do something about it.

• answering all of their questions that they have about life.

• telling everyone about their problems.

Practicing makes you:

• a more caring person

• a smarter person

• a better friend

• better than everyone else

• not have any problems of your own

Can you be happy for others even if you don't like the same things as them?
