Faith or Fear?

Hebrews 11:1 says that "...faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." When we become Christian, we do so by faith. In other words, we believe in God even though we cannot see Him with our own eyes.

Faith is...

• believing in the tooth fairy.

• believing in God even though we can't see Him.

• believing in only what I can see.

A very famous pastor once said, "Faith is the eye of the soul." (Charles Spurgeon) I think this pastor meant that even though we can't see Jesus with the eyes in our heads, we can see Him in other ways. For example, we can see God's beautiful work in all creation. We can also see Him in other people when they are kind and good. As we grow in our faith, we will begin to "see" God in lots of different ways.

We can see God...

• only on Sunday mornings when we go to Church.

• only with our eyes.

• in many different ways.

One time when Jesus was in a boat with His disciples, "a furious storm came up on the lake so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. His disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!" He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm." (Matthew 8:24-26 NIV) We too can become afraid by our circumstances, but we can remember this story and believe that Jesus is always with us and will help us through all our "storms".

When we become afraid...

• we should give up on God and not believe in Him.

• we should remember that God is always with us even when things get really scary around us.

• we should hold our breath until we turn blue.
