•Do not argue with, minimize, or challenge the client.

•Do not praise the client or give them false reassurances.

•Do not make false promises.

•Do not interpret the client or speculate on the dynamics of their problem.

•Don’t interrupt - you are supposed to be listening and seeing it from the client’s point of view.

•Don’t ask too many questions at once or multiple-choice questions - the client will probably not remember what you said and end up more confused.

•Don’t jump into silences - they can be helpful and means that the client is thinking.
