Consciousness as Sense of Self

• Lightest sleep

Consciousness as Direct Inner Awareness

• the inability to sleep
• Seeing things that are not really there
• Alpha waves
• Being aware of things inside yourself

Consciousness as Sensory Awareness

• maintains the brain's proper functioning
• The removal of the harmful substance from the body
• The environment around you: Sight, hearing, tasting, smelling
• Roam about almost nightly during stages of deep sleep

Levels of Consciousness

• "sleep"
• Preconscious, unconscious, non-conscious
• used to stay awake &used in WWII
• Seeing things that are not really there

Preconscious

• Reduce anxiety
• ideas not in your awareness right now, but you could recall them if you had to
• Consciousness as Sensory Awareness
• Drugs that slow the activity of the nervous system

Unconscious

• The removal of the harmful substance from the body
• Dream in symbols
• info stored here is unavailable to awareness under most circumstances
• ideas not in your awareness right now, but you could recall them if you had to

Defense Mechanisms

• Slurred speech, blurred vision, and impaired judgment
• focusing on a particular thing
• Push painful or unacceptable ideas out of our consciousness
• Lightest sleep
