• Farmers are mad that the federal government was taxing them and that they didn't have representation.
• Farmers are mad that the state government is taxing them, so they attack a federal artillery. State government had to defend the national government.
• Farmers are mad about the high cost of excise taxes (tax on luxury goods) so they protest the tax. Federal government sends in the military to control the rebellion.

The farmers in the backcountry (west) were mad that Whiskey was taxed, it was considered a luxury good in the east. But for the farmers they turned their grain into whiskey to make it easier to take to and sell at market.

They refused to pay the tax and were even tarring and feathering tax collectors!

Washington had to send in the military to control them.
