Long time ago there lived in West Sumatra, a poor widow with her son named Malin Kundang, Everyday they went to the forest to look for the firewood to sell Malin Kundang was not satisfied with their life. He wanted to become a rich man. He ask to his mother to let him go city. His mother was very sad. She let him go away, no matter how much she loved him.

Day by day, year by year, she waited and waited but she never got any news from him. One day a big ship cast in anchor for the night. The owner of the ship was a rich man called Malin Kundang. The poor widow was very glad. She went to the ship to met her son. When Malin Kundang saw an old woman like an old beggar coming to see him, he refused to meet her. He knew that the old woman was his mother. He scolded her before his men and his beautifu wife.

The old woman was very sad. She cried sorrowfuly and by accident said a curse “Oh God, I would rather see him become a stone than become a seditious son”. Suddenly, a strong wind blew violently and sank the ship down not far away from the beach. And miraculously, it turned into a stone.

THE LEGEND OF TANGKUBAN PERAHU

Long time ago in West Java, lived a woman named Dayang Sumbi. She lived alone in the forest. One day, Dayang Sumbi was quilting when suddenly, her quilt fell off from her house. Then she prayed to Gods, “If a man picks up my quilt, he will be my husband. If a woman, She will be my sister”.Then, a male dog picks it up. For keeping her words, Dayang Sumbi married the dog and called him Tumang. She gave birth to a baby, named him Sangkuriang, but never told him who his father was.

One day, Sangkuriang was hunting with Tumang in the forest and he found nothing. He blamed Tumang for the failure and killed him. When Dayang Sumbi knew that, she hit Sangkuriang’s head with a big spoon and asked him to go away. Many years later, the wandering Sangkuriang found a house in the forest. The woman, Dayang Sumbi recognized the adventurer as Sangkuriang. Sangkuriang forced her to marry him and Dayang asked him to make a vast boat in one night.

In the night, Sangkuriang called his friend, ghost and forest fairies to help him. Dayang Sumbi feared the boat could be finished on time, so she asked some women nearby to help her.The women hit the grains with grain puncher to make noise which disturbed the ghost and the fairies. The ghost and the fairies ran away before completing the boat. Sangkuriang was very angry, he kicked away the boat upside down and it turned into a mountain called Tangkuban Perahu.

It means the downside boat, which stood in the north of Bandung.

THE LEGEND OF SURABAYA

Once upon a time, in a river in East Java, there lived a shark named Sura and a crocodile named Baya. Both were strong and fierce creatures, and they often fought over prey.

Their battles always ended in a draw, and no one won or lost. Finally, they decided to make peace. They made an agreement to divide their territory. Sura would rule the water, while Baya would rule the land.

The agreement worked well for many years. Sura and Baya lived side by side in peace. However, one day, Sura broke the agreement. He caught a fish in the river,  which was Baya’s territory.

Baya was furious. He chased Sura and challenged him to battle again. Sura had no choice but  to fight.

 

Their second battle was even more fierce than the first. They fought for hours and both were badly injured. In the end, Sura managed to defeat Baya. He bit Baya’s neck and killed him.

Baya’s death brought peace to the Surabaya River. Sura became the sole ruler of the river, and he never broke the agreement again.

From this story, the name Surabaya comes from the words “Sura” which means brave and “Baya” which means danger. The name represents the bravery of the people of Surabaya in the face of danger.
