Types of Sentences and Clauses

A clause is a group of words that

• contains a subject OR a verb

• contains a subject AND a verb

• acts as a noun, verb, or adjective

• is not necessary to create a sentence

An independent clause

• makes sense on its own

• is present in all sentence types (simple, compound, complex, compound-complex)

• must have a subject and verb

• all of the above

A dependent clause

• makes sense on its own

• is part of a simple sentence

• always contains a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS)

• always contains a subordinating conjunction (AAAWWUBIS)
