In the late 1800s, physicists discovered radiation emanating from various materials, including uranium salts. This led to the identification of three types of radiation: alpha, beta, and gamma. Scientists initially named them A, B, and C radiation, but later adopted the more scientific names. A Geiger counter is used to detect these radiations, which vary in their ability to penetrate materials. Alpha particles are blocked by paper, beta by strontium, and gamma rays require thick lead to be partially blocked. Alpha radiation consists of helium nuclei, beta radiation of electrons, and gamma radiation of electromagnetic waves.
