Monogamy

Polygamy

• Having more than one partner or spouse at a time (poly = more than one); not legal anywhere in the United States but practiced

• A form of marriage where one person has multiple spouses at different times

• A legal form of marriage recognized in some states of the USA

• A relationship involving only two partners at a time

Endogamy

• Marriage between people of different social categories

• Marriage between people of the same social category; Example: same religion or Ashkenazi Jews and Royal families marrying within the family to keep money and power

• Marriage that occurs outside of one's social group

• Marriage based solely on love and personal choice

Exogamy

• Marriage within the tribe, caste, or social group; helps with genetics when reproducing

• Marriage outside the tribe, caste, or social group; helps with genetics when reproducing

• Marriage that occurs only between individuals of the same social group; promotes genetic diversity

• Marriage that is prohibited by law or custom; limits genetic diversity

Extended family

• A family structure where only parents and children live together.

• A family structure where two or more adult generations of the same family share financials and live in the same house; depends on economy of culture/country.

• A family structure that includes only siblings and their children.

• A family structure that consists of unrelated individuals living together.
