Maps can also be misleading. They look smooth and bright. Maps do not always show the truth, though. All maps are a little bit out of shape in some way. That is because Earth is round. Yet most maps are flat and square. Maps can still give us a good idea of where things are.
Maps usually have names of places. They have a scale. This helps us to understand how a distance on the map fits with the real world. They usually have symbols, too. Symbols are signs or shapes that stand for something else. A good map has a guide to symbols. This is called a key or legend. It explains what the symbols mean.
A map has many pictures, lines and other shapes. These help us to understand a large area.
