Simply the best! Last weekend lots of bands played a concert at a venue near me and I was lucky enough to go. If you want the best night ever, definitely go to a live concert! The best thing about going to hear live music was listening to my favourite singer perform all my favourite tracks. She also wore a great costume for the show. Of course, going to a concert can be expensive, though, and it isn’t something you can afford to do very often if you’re a teenager. The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed, and like the rest of the audience, I really enjoyed it, although it was a bit crowded and there wasn’t much room to dance. It really was an unforgettable experience. You should go – you won’t be disappointed! (taken from Gold EXPERIENCE B1 published by PEARSON)
What might have happened before the writer went to the concert? There is more than one correct answer. Tick on every correct answer!
A. The writer bought a ticket for the show.
B. The favourite singer prepared costumes for the performance.
C. The bands rehearsed their songs.
D. The audience waited for the concert to start.
E. The writer wrote a review about the experience.

A new world language Shigetaka Kurita first created emojis while working for a mobile phone company. He wanted to design pictures that improved short text messages by making them sound friendlier, an aim he certainly achieved. Emojis weren’t very popular when I was growing up, but today they’re like a world language. In fact, some people say emojis are the fastest-growing language. A written language that uses pictures isn’t new. The Egyptians had one, for example. However, it’s worrying that emojis are so popular. I developed a large vocabulary while I was learning English at school. That vocabulary helps me communicate a wide range of complex ideas in a way that people can understand. If we use emojis all the time, we lose the ability to write. We can only communicate ideas in simple ways in texts. Of course, it’s normal for language to change over time, and it’s great that the written form continues to evolve today, both online and offline. However, we spend a lot of time writing only short messages and using technology that guesses the word we want to type. It also corrects spelling mistakes, so no one needs to learn how to spell anymore. As well as that, no one seems to bother with punctuation. Teachers can see the effect of this in written work in the classroom. The ability to write well is important for our school lives. Using emojis is a good way to show our mood quickly, and they are fine to use with friends, but using them in schoolwork is a bad idea. It just makes the writer seem like a weak communicator. Writing is a key skill in education. Teachers need to make sure that young people can all write well so that they can communicate well. This means learning to write without emojis and understanding when they are and aren’t OK. (taken from Gold EXPERIENCE B1 published by PEARSON)
SOAL : Which sentence best describes how the writer feels about emojis?
Emojis are a good way for us to avoid learning to spell.
Young people need to learn to write without emojis.
Social networks should stop using emojis.
Emojis can help create international friendships

Seeing your favourite band LIVE Going to my first concert was one of the most brilliant things I’ve ever done. Watching a band play live is so much better than watching a recording on TV. However, concerts have their problems, so here are some things you should think about before you go to your first live music event. First, if there are no seats, plan with your friends or family where to stand before you go. If you want to be near the stage, you’ll need to arrive very early. This means several hours on your feet before the band appears. This can be both tiring and boring. I’d suggest you only do it for a band you really love. What you wear is really important. Two things are sure: you’re going to get hot and people will tread on your toes. This means you shouldn’t wear anything too heavy except perhaps on your feet. Avoid sandals and wear trainers instead. You can look good and be comfortable at the same time. Don’t take too much stuff or you’ll get bored carrying it around. Think about the essential things you’ll need. These include your ticket, some money and your phone. You can put these into your pocket or a small bag. Make sure everything is safe during the concert. You’ll want to take a phone or a camera to take lots of photos. Make sure it has enough power and memory for the whole evening. Take a spare battery if you have one. It’ll help you take all the photos you want to remember the event. Finally, remember that people will dance around during the concert. This means you’ll probably get pushed. If it’s a lively band, the audience might go a bit crazy. If this isn’t for you, move away. Stand near the back. You can still enjoy the concert from there. You’ll have more space to dance, too. Yes, dance. Above all, dance and have a great time! (taken from Gold EXPERIENCE B1 published by PEARSON)
SOAL : Which sentence best summarizes the advice about what to bring to the concert?
Bring all your belongings to be prepared for anything
Don’t bring a ticket to avoid losing it
Carry only essential items in a small bag or pocket
Leave your phone at home to enjoy the music more

Let me (and my family) entertain you Famous families like the Kardashians, or the Beckhams appear in magazines every week, choosing to attend film openings or enjoying holidays in beautiful locations. Some famous children end up with a list of social media followers before they can even speak. But what is life like for celebrity children? Willow Smith, the daughter of American actor Will Smith, spoke recently about her experiences growing up with photographers following her around. For Willow, it made her sad when people who didn’t know her laughed at her or made comments about her, even though that didn’t happen very often. She got particularly mad, though, when journalists felt they had the right to know all about her life, after she’d asked them to leave her alone. Most teenagers would hate it if their private lives were so public. A recent study has highlighted the many advantages for the children of celebrity parents. Top universities offer them places even when their grades aren’t great and famous designers give them free clothes. But these kids are also under a lot of stress. People expect them to be super-talented and super-attractive, just like their parents, and they are rude when the children aren’t so talented or good-looking. If they didn’t have rich and famous parents, they would never get all this negative attention. Most of them are just ordinary kids exploring who they are, so the last thing they need is to be told they’ll never be as good as their mum or dad! If they could, perhaps many would prefer to turn their backs on celebrity. Others decide to use their special contacts to try and become successful entertainers themselves. Willow Smith chose the second option and in 2007 decided to become a singer. By 2010 she was the youngest artist on Jay-Z’s record label ‘Roc Nation’. However if she succeeds, some people will say that it’s because of her family’s contacts and not really due to her musical talent. Willow has had to face a lot of hurtful comments and that hasn’t always been easy, but she believes that to have real success, you have to work hard and that, eventually, people will recognise that, whoever your parents are. (taken from Gold EXPERIENCE B1 published by PEARSON)
SOAL : What made Willow Smith particularly angry when dealing with journalists?
They followed her to school every day.
They wanted to know everything about her life.
They made her perform in public events.
They forced her to post on social media.
