Matilda, a woman of modest means, dreams of luxury and is unhappy with her life. Her husband secures an invitation to a prestigious party, but Matilda laments her lack of suitable attire and jewelry. She borrows a diamond necklace from a wealthy friend, only to lose it after the event. Unable to find it, she and her husband replace it with a costly replica, plunging them into debt for ten years. After finally repaying the debt, Matilda learns the original necklace was a fake, worth only a fraction of the replacement cost.
