Gerald Ford, the only U.S. president never elected to the office, was an unexpected leader. Born Leslie King Jr., he became Gerald Ford Jr. after his stepfather. A football star and Yale law graduate, Ford served in WWII before entering politics. He married Betty Ford and served 25 years in Congress, becoming House Minority Leader. Appointed Vice President after Spiro Agnew's resignation, Ford became President following Nixon's resignation. His presidency faced economic challenges and a controversial pardon of Nixon. Despite assassination attempts, Ford achieved foreign policy successes. He lost the 1976 election to Jimmy Carter and retired to California, remembered as a stabilizing figure.
