In June 1862, Robert E. Lee took command of the Army of Northern Virginia, pushing Union forces away from Richmond. Lee's subsequent victories led him to invade the North, crossing into Maryland. The Union, under George McClellan, discovered Lee's plans and moved quickly to confront him. The Battle of Antietam, fought on September 17, 1862, was the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with 23,000 casualties. Despite being outnumbered, Lee held his ground. The battle ended without a decisive victor, but it halted Lee's invasion. This allowed President Lincoln to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, shifting the war's focus to ending slavery and deterring European intervention.
