Sojourner Truth, born Isabella Baumfree in 1797, was a former slave who became a prominent abolitionist and women's rights advocate. She escaped slavery in 1826 and successfully challenged the sale of her son in court. Inspired by religion, she changed her name in 1843 and joined forces with notable abolitionists. Truth became a traveling preacher and delivered her famous 'Ain't I a Woman?' speech in 1851. During the Civil War, she recruited troops for the Union Army and met President Lincoln. Truth continued her advocacy until her death in 1883, leaving a lasting legacy commemorated by a statue in the US Capitol.
