NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was formed in April 1949 by Western powers to counter Soviet aggression and prevent nationalist militarism in Europe. It was a collective military alliance where an attack on one member was considered an attack on all. The formation was influenced by the Marshall Plan, the Berlin Blockade, and the spread of communism in Eastern Europe. Initially, 12 countries joined, allowing the U.S. to maintain a military presence in Europe. NATO's strategy included massive retaliation with nuclear weapons. Over time, more countries joined, and the Soviet Union's response was the Warsaw Pact. Despite challenges, NATO continues to exist today.
