In March 1867, John Muir suffered a factory accident that left him blind. After six weeks, he regained his sight and vowed to pursue his dreams of exploration. He moved to San Francisco and soon traveled to Yosemite, where he built a cabin and became concerned about the impact of livestock on the valley. Muir wrote articles advocating for Yosemite to become a national park, but it remained under state control. When President Teddy Roosevelt visited, Muir convinced him of the need for federal protection. This led to the Antiquities Act of 1906, placing Yosemite under federal control and preserving it for future generations.
