In 1871, the US sent Frederick Low with a naval squadron to Korea, but despite military engagements, they failed to secure a treaty. The Koreans resisted, and the Americans withdrew. Korea remained isolated until Japan opened it up, allowing the US to sign a treaty in 1882.
