After serving two terms as the first U.S. president, George Washington ventured into the whiskey business. In 1797, he was approached by James Anderson, a Scottish farm manager, who proposed building a distillery at Mount Vernon. By 1798, the distillery was producing nearly 11,000 gallons of whiskey, making it the largest in the country. However, a fire in 1814 ended this enterprise. The distillery was rebuilt in 2007 and is now open for tours.
