South Carolina began as a proprietary colony in 1665, with initial settlements near Cape Fear. Charlestown, established in 1669, became a key trading hub. The colony faced challenges, including swampy lands and Native American attacks. In 1719, it became a royal colony. During the Revolutionary War, South Carolina saw significant battles, including the defense of Fort Sullivan and the Battle of Cowpens. It became the eighth state to ratify the Constitution in 1788. In 1860, South Carolina was the first state to secede, leading to the Civil War. Post-war, the state saw significant changes, including a majority African-American legislature in 1869. In 1951, the Savannah River Plant was established for atomic energy production.
