The US Dakota War of 1862 was a significant yet often misunderstood event in Minnesota's history. It began on August 18, 1862, when a faction of the Dakota people attacked settlers due to starvation and unjust treaties. The conflict included several battles, with the Dakota initially successful but eventually forced to retreat. The war ended with the defeat of the Dakota at Lone Tree Lake. A military commission sentenced many Dakota to death, but President Lincoln commuted most sentences. The war resulted in the largest mass execution in US history and the expulsion of the Dakota from Minnesota.
