Fort Snelling, built in 1819 at the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers, is a site of historical significance and deep sadness for the Dakota people. Following the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862, over 1,700 Dakota, mostly women, children, and elders, were forced into an internment camp at Fort Snelling. They endured a harsh winter, facing disease and brutality. In 1863, the U.S. government exiled the Dakota to the Crow Creek reservation. Today, Fort Snelling serves as a place of remembrance and education, acknowledging its complex history.
